The Turfgrass Pathology Program at North Carolina State University is dedicated to advancing the science and management of turfgrass diseases through integrated research, extension, and teaching. Housed within the NC State Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology, our program serves the turfgrass industry across North Carolina and beyond, supporting golf courses, athletic fields, sod producers, landscape managers, and homeowners with science-based solutions.
Founded in 1969 by Dr. Leon Lucas, our program has built a long-standing reputation for excellence in turfgrass disease diagnostics, epidemiology, and management. For more than five decades, we have addressed emerging disease challenges, improved fungicide stewardship, and developed integrated management strategies that enhance turf quality while promoting environmental responsibility.
Since its inception, the program has produced over 100 peer-reviewed publications and trained over 35 graduate students, many of whom now serve as leaders in academia, industry, and extension. Our commitment to mentorship and hands-on education ensures that students gain both rigorous scientific training and practical field experience.
Through collaborative research, stakeholder engagement, and innovative teaching, we continue to advance turfgrass pathology and support the sustainability of managed turf systems across diverse environments.
